Satellite TV Program Monitoring
In my opinion, it was a very wise decision to serve notices on cable and satellite programmers that television is now coarser than ever. Each year television programmers seem to push just a little further on how much they can get away with. For those of us who would like to monitor what our children watch are having an increasingly difficult time in doing so. Our choices for decent programs are becoming slimmer all the time.
The Federal Communications Commission Chairman agrees that parents need better and more tools to help us navigate the entertainment waters, particularly in the satellite TV and cable areas. One option is to create a "family-friendly" tier of channels that would offer shows suitable for kids. I think this is one of the better options because we would have more of a variety of children's programs to choose from. This would also allow us more flexibility to filter out channels we don't find acceptable. Another option is for cable and satellite providers to consider letting consumers pay for bundle of channels that they could choose themselves. This is an "a la carte" pricing system that some in Congress have already backed. I think this is also a good idea, although cable and satellite providers are complaining that this form of pricing would drive up cost for equipment , customer service, and marketing. These changes would likely be passed to subscribers.
This subject of satellite TV cleaning up its act is one to think about, especially for those of us with children. As you can see, there are many options for filtering TV with more becoming available all the time. As Kevin Martin, the FCC Chairman says, "You can always turn television off and of course block the channels you don't want, but why should you have to."
